Overview
The flagship how-it-works page covers the whole platform. This page zooms in on a single article: one keyword, followed step by step until it is a live post. It is worth understanding because every choice in the path has a visible effect on the result. The brief decides what the article covers. The brand voice decides how it reads. The quality gate decides whether it ships. Knowing the lifecycle is how you know which lever to pull when an article isn't quite right.
Step by step
- 1
You give AutoPublish a target keyword
Start from one keyword you want to rank for. It can come from your own research, from the AutoPublish research tools, or from a slot in a topic cluster.
- 2
AutoPublish reads the live SERP
AutoPublish analyzes the pages currently ranking for that keyword — their search intent, the subtopics and heading patterns they share, and the People-Also-Ask questions around the query.
- 3
It assembles a structured brief
Intent, recommended headings, must-cover subtopics, searcher questions, and a word-count target become a brief. This is the spec the article will be written against — editable if you want to adjust it.
- 4
The model drafts the article
On the model you chose — GPT, Claude, or Gemini, under BYOK — AutoPublish drafts the full article against the brief, your brand voice, and your Business Brain. It comes out structured, not as a wall of text.
- 5
Image, metadata, and internal links are added
A featured image is generated or stock-matched with alt text, a length-correct meta title and description are written, and contextual internal links are injected from your site's live sitemap.
- 6
The 14-signal quality gate scores it
The finished article is scored 0–100 across 14 signals. If it scores below threshold it is flagged and held back; if it passes, it becomes eligible to publish.
- 7
It publishes — reviewed or direct
The article either enters the review queue for a human to read, edit, and approve, or publishes straight to your CMS. On publish, an IndexNow ping can notify search engines of the new URL.
Frequently asked questions
How long does one article take?
From triggering generation to a finished, gated article is a matter of minutes. If the article is routed through human review, the additional time is however long the review takes — usually a few minutes per article, since the reviewer is editing a finished draft, not writing one.
What if the article scores below the quality threshold?
It's flagged and held back rather than published. You can regenerate it, adjust the brief, or edit it up to passing in the review queue. The gate is the reason a weak article never reaches your site automatically.
Can I change the brief before the article is written?
Yes. The SERP brief is editable — adjust headings, add or remove subtopics, change the word-count target — before generation. Many teams let it run automatically and only edit briefs for priority pages.
Which model writes the article?
Whichever you choose for that generation — GPT, Claude, or Gemini. Under BYOK the request runs on your own API key, so you pay the provider's rate directly with no markup.
Does every article get internal links?
Yes, when relevant targets exist. AutoPublish reads your live sitemap and injects contextual internal links into the body. Internal linking is also one of the 14 signals the quality gate scores.
When AutoPublish is not the answer
We would rather you know now than sign up and churn. AutoPublish is not the right tool if any of these describe you:
- You need a few deeply original thought-leadership pieces — that is a job for a specialist writer with real lived experience, not a volume tool.
- You will not review AI output at all. The 14-signal quality gate is a safety net, not a replacement for editorial judgment.
- You want to publish thin content fast to game search. The quality gate is built specifically to stop that — you would be fighting your own tool.
- Your content needs licensed expertise — medical, legal, or financial advice — without a qualified expert reviewing it before publish.
- You need original news reporting or investigative journalism, which depends on primary sourcing AutoPublish does not do.
