Definition
Keyword density is the percentage of times a target keyword appears in a piece of content relative to the total word count. While keyword density was a dominant ranking factor in early SEO, Google's modern algorithms rely on semantic understanding rather than keyword frequency, making excessive keyword repetition (keyword stuffing) a penalizable practice. A natural keyword density of 0.5–2% is generally considered acceptable, but the more important consideration is covering the topic comprehensively with natural language.
